What We Do at LightSail

At LightSail, we are dedicated to only two things: solving the most difficult literacy problems for students from grade 1 to the first year of high school, and turning students into real readers.
We know what works when it comes to promoting literacy. We've seen this in research, and we see it happening in the classroom based on actual daily work.
Students who read for 25 minutes or more in their personal zone learn and grow. Their test results and the dynamics recorded by the app are proof of this.
Our adaptive learning technologies give students and teachers the tools they need to achieve their literacy goals. It all starts with access to more than 6000 texts from almost 100 publishers across all themes and genres.

LightSail can guarantee that all students, regardless of their level of interest, will have something interesting and unique to read. When students first start using LightSail, they go through a quick, grade-aligned but adaptive diagnostic called the Power Challenge.
Official teaching requirements provide a lexical framework, LightSail uses this vocabulary to adapt each student's library to present personalized choices.
In addition to custom viewing recommended books, students can also view the entire library by topic and genre.
Using this feature, they will see books marked with small green lightning bolts indicating that these books contain Power Challenge tests. These books are located exactly in the current zone of the nearest development of this reader and will contribute to the faster growth of reading.
The Power Challenge is just one of the ways LightSail adapts and personalizes the reading experience to make students stronger readers.
LightSail libraries are actively developed to promote reading methods that will best contribute to the growth of student skills. As the student reads and accepts LightSail scores, the library continues to adapt based on its newly calibrated lexical measure, and new texts appear, so that the student always reads the most appropriate books.
LightSail implements grades right into the reading process to ensure that students are engaged and growing. Short relevant questions appear as the student progresses through the text.
LightSail partnered with MetaMetrics, the Creator of the lexical framework, to implement vocabular scores, called cloze items, shown every two to four pages in each book. These scores allow LightSail to accurately determine a student's reading level, predict future results, and dynamically adjust their reading experience by constantly updating their library.
Students will also face multiple choice and short answers to questions at the end of the chapters. These questions look more closely at the student's understanding of a particular book and how the student performs a particular skill, strategy, or standard.
Short answers to questions are written on a fairly complex level and require textual evidence, as well as critical thinking.
Teachers can see how students perform embedded multiple-choice or short-answer questions, and they can drill down to specific standards to inform targeted learning.
Each book comes complete with text grades, so schools can start using LightSail without any effort, but LightSail can also be customized. Like many LightSail features, teachers can turn grades on or off for individual students or the entire class, further customizing the experience.
Teachers can also add their own assessment questions using the drop-a-pin LightSail feature. LightSail scores and its data provide a holistic and comprehensive view of the student and greatly simplify the work of teachers, helping them to purposefully educate and motivate students on an individual basis.
LightSail believes in the motivating power of providing students with transparency about their own data. Students can monitor their lexical growth, project their future reading Levels based on recent results, and plan their progress toward goals.
LightSail students who track their development in this way often take it upon themselves to correctly pass these predicted lexical grades, which encourages even the most reluctant readers, pushes them to succeed, and motivates them to continue to enjoy their achievements.
Students can also see how many books they have read during this year, earn motivational badges as they try out new genres, pass tests well, and increase their reading stamina. Adaptive, personalized word walls help students track the words they've looked at and the grades they've missed while continuing to support vocabulary acquisition.
Such persuasive learning technologies encourage students to perform better on the tests they encounter throughout the text. And what is the result? Deeper understanding and increased responsibility for learning and greater motivation to read more! By helping students make sense of their own data, LightSail promotes their development as readers.
LightSail also improves learning with new ideas for teachers, whether for an entire class, a small group, or individual students. ThinkFeed LightSail takes classroom discussion to a new level, giving every student a chance to speak out, even those who don't usually participate. Because students write their thoughts directly into the text, teachers can see and respond to these annotations in real time, initiating the kind of instant dialogue that students love.
With access to student reading behavior, annotations, and achievement data at hand and in real time, teachers can meaningfully group students to provide targeted learning. LightSail is designed to handle the logistical burden of differentiation for ELA, so teachers can focus on what's most important while meeting the needs of every reader in your class.
